The community health centers lie at the heart of the Order of Malta Lebanon’s mission, driven by the belief that ensuring primary health at the community level can significantly reduce the risks of untreated illnesses, especially in underserved populations facing financial or logistical barriers. OML operates 11 community healthcare centers across Lebanon’s governorates, focusing on rural, isolated, and conflict-affected areas. These centers offer a comprehensive range of services, including medical consultations, mental health support, and social services, ensuring accessible, inclusive, and sustainable care for all populations, including displaced groups.
OML’s healthcare model prioritizes prevention, with an emphasis on early screenings, health awareness, and proactive interventions. The centers address physical, mental, and social well-being through holistic services, building strong connections with local populations. The centers feature medicine dispensaries replenished regularly from OML’s central warehouse in Ain El Remmaneh, and consultations are provided at minimal or no cost based on individual health assessments.
What sets OML’s community health centers apart is their patient-centered care, transparent operations, and constant monitoring and evaluation. The centers are committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care while integrating innovative solutions like digital health tools and telemedicine to meet growing healthcare demands.
As a pioneer in mobile medical outreach operations, the Order of Malta Lebanon operates 7 fully equipped Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) and one mobile medical antenna that drive across the country’s most remote areas and offer free health care services to those who do not have access to any medical service or healthcare facility. Each of these MMUs is a 30-seat bus that has been converted into a mobile clinic comprising a waiting area and a consultation room, offering patients a full-fledged medical experience. Every morning, a medical team composed of 2 doctors, 2 nurses, a social worker and a field coordinator leave the central hub with 2 drivers to cover hundreds of kilometers across several areas, following a weekly route. Additionally, a support team (project manager, financial director, and administrative assistant) follow up closely on the operations from the headquarters in Beirut. The MMUs services are offered free of charge and their primary aim is to strengthen the preventive health capacities of vulnerable Lebanese and refugee populations through:- Medical consultations, preliminary diagnosis, medical drugs- Referrals to one of the Order’s community health centers to conduct simple tests or specialized consultations- Referrals to one of the Order’s contracted laboratories or hospitals to run more thorough tests or undergo medical procedures when needed
Preventive care reduces the risk for diseases, disabilities, and death. Therefore, the Order of Malta decided to take the lead and focus on prevention initiatives that are rolled out throughout the year. These medical campaigns go beyond awareness and education of patients to different diseases, whereby specialized doctors are present to conduct the necessary tests and examinations to decrease the burden of sickness and associated risk factors. The screening and awareness campaigns offer: - Screening Services- Awareness and education- Referrals and additional investigations and/or treatmentThis endeavor is unique and stems from the belief that medical awareness produces better health outcomes by providing information about particular topics that encourage the beneficiaries to take action to improve their health and the health of their families.
