The diplomatic activities of the Order are closely linked to its humanitarian mission and are headed by the Grand Chancellor. Today the Order benefits from:
- Diplomatic missions in 110 countries and the European Union
- Agreements concluded with over 50 states
- Official representations and permanent observer status in the United Nations and numerous international organizations
The above provides a unique diplomatic humanitarian network which is both a demonstration of its sovereignty and an operational instrument for its humanitarian activities.
Diplomatic relations also mean unparalleled access, at the political level, to national governments and international organizations. Most importantly, the Order of Malta is neutral and impartial on the international political scene.
Mimic Orders
The Sovereign Order of Malta wishes to point out the proliferation all over the world of bodies and associations which, using symbols and names not unlike those of the Order, are trying to represent themselves as legitimate and recognized orders of Saint John. Besides creating misunderstanding and confusion, they hurt the good will the Order has established over many years.
Caution is strongly recommended. When in doubt and if you are in Lebanon, please have their authenticity confirmed by the Lebanese Association of the Knights of Malta.
