In 1958, following the 100th anniversary of the Immaculate Virgins apparitions to Bernadette at the Massabielle Grotto, the Order of Malta launched its international pilgrimage to Notre Dame de Lourdes in France.
Since then, every year, during the first weekend of May, members and volunteers of the Order of Malta from all over the world travel and gather in Lourdes to accompany the sick and disabled, whom we call Our Lords. During this pilgrimage, nearly 20.000 participants learn what belonging to the Order of Malta really means: devotion, service and fellowship.
The true meaning of this pilgrimage is to discover the Other, through his suffering. In Lourdes, members and volunteers live their pilgrimage through the service of the Other, a service which reminds us all of the humility of Christs actions.
Knights, Dames and volunteers are assigned to small teams, assisting their guest each day from early morning into the evening. A doctor assists the teams and the guests in case of need. The schedule is busy yet rewarding, and there is time for reflection and meditation. In addition to being a tremendous spiritual experience, the pilgrimage is also a very enjoyable and gratifying time.
The Lebanese Association has been taking part in this 4 days pilgrimage for more than 20 years. It started in 1983 with only 5 members and 3 guests, growing every year to become a set number of 200 participants, including 25 Lords.
