Supporting Small Farmers in Remote Rural Areas
In times of crisis, the Order of Malta Lebanon considers domestic food production and strengthening local food systems as pre-requisites to promoting good health and nutrition, eventually preventing diseases on the long run. By bridging between humanitarian assistance, capacity building and sustainable development, the agro-humanitarian and functional food program works to reinforce the health sector, strengthen the economic resilience of vulnerable communities, and improve food security and local dietary habits.
The project strives for both short and long-term impact. On the short run, it aims at improving availability and access of food by helping farmers maintain their production. This approach activates local economies of remote areas in the vicinity of the Order Community Health Centers. On the long run, the Order is looking to improve the resilience of food systems in Lebanon by promoting sustainable production, thus aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 2: “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.
